Vicente Gandía presents Ceramic Monastrell aged in vats

The Valencian winery recovers the origin of winemaking with this Ceramic Monastrell.

To speak of the use of ceramic vats is to go back into the origin of wine. These containers have been used for more than 3000 years in their production, aging and transport. Bodegas Vicente Gandía wants to return into the origin with an elaboration that recovers the use of ceramic vats in combination with the aging in oak barrels. Ceramic Monastrell aged in vats, made by the prestigious winemaker Pepe Hidalgo, technical director of the winery.

“The wine and the vine has been present in my life since I was born. My grandfather was a wine master and perhaps the most important figure in Spanish viticulture and my father is also a great techer of viniculture and one of the most important winemakers in the country. That’s why, for me, is my profession but is also the biggest hobby that I have. I live it with passion and enthusiasm, I always look forward to the next harvest and still every day I’m excited to find the complexity of a good wine”. Pepe Hidalgo, Bodegas Vicente Gandia Technical Director

Ceramic, derived from the ancient Greek word Keramiké (‘made of clay’), is a wine made from old vines of Monastrell grape variety, grown on very dry soil. Aged 11 months in fine oak barrels and refined in traditional ceramic vats, known as “tinajas”. The micro-oxygenation that this material allows through the walls of the container, produces a slow and continuous supply of oxygen that preserves and enhances the flavour of the fruit, providing freshness and expressiveness, while aging in the barrel provides great finesse and elegance to our wines, while allowing them to be very respectful of the specific characteristics of our terroir.

The use of the Monastrell variety also represents a return into the roots of the company since it was one of the first varieties used in its origins at the end of the 19th century. It’s a typical variety from the southeast of Spain that needs very hot climates and very arid soils. With this grape we obtain very powerful wines with a great concentration. After spending some months in the barrel and refining it in ceramic jars, we get an intense, dark red wine with lively edges. On the nose we can find the aromas of ripe plum, liquorice and notes of coconut and vanilla. In the mouth is wide, robust, with sweet tannins and elegant acidity. Leaving the memory in the mouth of these very ripe red fruits.

Made with the distinctive quality seal of the Appellation of Origin Valencia, A wine region that reinvents itself and is committed to the recovery of native grapes, Ceràmic Monastrell is positioned in the premium wine segment to be able to compete face to face with the great references of Spanish wines on the menus of the best restaurants.

Ceramic Monastrell is another step on the path that Bodegas Vicente Gandía has taken in the production of great iconic wines that are helping the company to generate new business opportunities and grow in its positioning, which is a step forward for Valencian wines.
